About
Built on a hill above the Mondego River, Coimbra was Portugal’s medieval capital before Lisbon took its place in the 13th century. Today, its historic centre is dominated by the university, whose buildings occupy the former royal palace.
The University of Coimbra was founded in 1290 and moved permanently to the city in 1537. Its baroque library and historic courtyards are the heart of the old city and one of Portugal’s most impressive cultural sights.
Beyond the university, Coimbra is full of steep medieval lanes, hidden courtyards and old churches.
