Casa de Mateus is one of Portugal’s most beautiful Baroque estates. Built in the first half of the 18th century, the palace is known for its elaborate stonework, elegant façade and dramatic double staircase.

Upon entering the estate, you see the Lying girl (Menina Deitada) sculpture by João Cutileiro, protected by the reflection of the palace in the pond. Initially part of a retrospective exhibition, it luckily remained to this day – one of the most touching pieces of art to be seen.

The estate is also closely associated with Mateus Rosé. Created in 1942 by Sogrape founder Fernando van Zeller Guedes, it became one of Portugal’s biggest international wine success stories. The distinctive bottle and the image of Casa de Mateus on the label helped make the brand instantly recognisable around the world. At its peak in 1978, Mateus accounted for more than 40% of Portugal’s total table-wine exports, with around 3.5 million cases sold worldwide.
