About

Madeira is an island of steep volcanic mountains, ancient forests and dramatic Atlantic coastlines. Its landscape changes quickly, from misty mountain peaks and laurel forests to volcanic swimming pools and tiny villages perched above the ocean.

The Laurisilva Forest is one of Madeira's most remarkable natural treasures. This ancient subtropical forest once covered much of Southern Europe and is now largely preserved on the island. You can explore it on one of the many levada trails, following historic irrigation channels through dense greenery, waterfalls and mountain valleys.

Madeira also has a strong food and wine culture. Try bolo do caco with garlic butter, espetada grilled over an open fire and the island's famous poncha, made with sugar cane spirit, honey and citrus.

Things to do

1. Hike a levada

Walk through Madeira's lush forests, waterfalls and mountain valleys along the island's historic irrigation channels.

2. Watch the sunrise above the clouds

Go to Pico do Arieiro or Pico Ruivo for some of Madeira's most dramatic mountain views. Even if you don’t make it on time for sunrise, the views are breathtaking throughout the day as well.

3. Visit the Monte Palace Tropical Garden

Explore one of Madeira's most beautiful gardens, filled with exotic plants, colourful tiles, sculptures and Japanese-inspired landscapes.

4. Drive the old coastal roads

Explore the island by car and stop at viewpoints, waterfalls and small villages along the way.

5. Explore Funchal

Wander through the old town, visit the Mercado dos Lavradores, take the cable car up to Monte and finish with a glass of Madeira wine.
