About
The Ruínas Fingidas (literally "fake ruins") are a 19th-century architectural folly inside Évora's Jardim Público, designed by Italian architect José Cinatti as part of the garden. Despite the name, they're assembled from real architectural fragments salvaged from civil and religious monuments around the city.
The whole composition is pure Romantic-era staging, inspired by the 19th-century fascination with ruins, decay and the passage of time. The idea was not simply to create something beautiful, but to evoke nostalgia for Portugal's past, particularly the grandeur and adventure associated with the Age of Discoveries.
The peacocks roaming around are adding an extra layer of drama.
